One simple way of checking if it's the fuel pump is to pull off the coil wire and remove the air filter cover. Use a mirror and flashlight to see down the throttle body and have someone crank the engine. If you see gas, the pump's ok.

update: Yup, I had a groud out all right. The replacement alt has a fan on it, which the others lacked, and is slightly larger. It was, therefore, slightly closer to the wiring harness. You guessed it. Chewed wiring. Looks like I've got some work ahead of me.:( Question for the informed...
