Have you tried clearing the CMOS with the capacitors discharged? To do this, unplug the computer, then hit the power button. You might see the fans power up for a fraction of a second. This ensures there is no power left in the capacitors. Then try clearing the CMOS. Sometimes if I don't...

It may just be that your monitor can't handle the resolution with the same sharpness as it can at lower resolution. My KDS 19 incher has razor sharp images at 1280x960 and below, but at 1600x1200, it gets a visibly fuzzy.
