At least you can back up the data files from safe mode. You may be forced to do that and then format/reinstall.

It's always a risky proposition, but you can just slap the stuff in there and let Windows figure it out, with one notable exception. If you are changing away from an older mobo meant for a AMD chip with a Via chipset, you have a higher probability of running into problems. You can minmize this...

You are correct. Linux clients at G@H have a history of slow/buggy perfoemance. I don't know that I see fixing that as a huge priority at Stanford, either.

This sounds stupid, but I've seen it work before. Get into your BIOS (hit delete as the computer boots). In the Onboard Peripherals section, look at the settings for your onboard parallel port. If it's SPP, change it to ECP/EPP. Save settings and exit. Try again.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've been predicting a 5-10% fall in the first day, but I'm also willing to bet that you see a 3-4% rebound on the second. A lot of mutual funds have strong cash poitions they're sitting on due to the stuff going on before this. They aren't going to resist...
