2 thoughts - 1) Is this CD-ROM a slave to the hard drive, or is it on it's own IDE cable? Should be on a separate channel from the hard drive. 2) Is DMA enabled on the CD-ROM?

Oh, I'll agree that the media is appealing to the lowest common denominator. My argument is that this is an effect, not a cause. The cause is the steady degradation of the willingness of most folks to accept personal responsibility and take approriate action. I lay the blame for that cause...

I think you have to remember that the folks who post here are not, by and large, your average computer user. WE may have all that stuff, but most people don't bother. I function as "tech support" for two large families (mine and my wife's). My family is using (on average) a K6-2 400 CPU...
