I've used it as well, for things like WinAmp, Solitare and Notepad (?).
I did want it mainly for HyperTerminal, but for some reason it was unable to access the comm ports, even though they were correctly configured in the wineconf file.
My son prefers most food bought or from frozen, and as yet he does'nt have a gerat appreceation for good home cooking, even though my wife is an excelent cook, so I guess ( if yours is anthing like my kid ) it was certainly a compliment.
DERA were experamenting with somthing similar a few years ago, it seemd to work quite well in a wooded area ( tree's and leave's ) but I don't know about in a city.
That was a few years ago, they have had time to work on it since then..........
I have a couple of versions of XP Pro, a retail boxed copy and a corporate edition. The corporate edtn. has the WPA already done so no problems there.
The retail version has been reinstalled about 20 times or so, all I have ever done is let it register with M$ over the net and it just works.
I have two Optical mice, apart from the feet I haven't cleaned them.
I have M$ v2 & v3 Intellimouse explorer's, and would be a bit rekuctant to disasemble them.
